The Ivy League schools are America’s oldest schools and are ranked amongst the best universities in the United States and worldwide. But little is told of their shady pasts… Brown University was founded in 1764 by the Reverend James Manning who owned African slaves. The university’s namesake comes from John, Nicholas and Moses Brown who were big time slave traders. Money from the African slave trade also financed Yale University’s first endowed professorship, its first endowed scholarship, and its first endowed library fund. An Antiguan African slave trader Isaac Royall and his slave owning son Isaac Royall Jr. are responsible for Harvard’s Law School with their money and land donated to the school from the African slave trade. John Witherspoon, the president of Princeton University (1768 – 1794) was a Presbyterian minister who also owned African slaves. Several trustees of Princeton University also owned African slaves. Dartmouth College founder Eleazar Wheelock, pastor of the Second Congregational Church of Lebanon, Connecticut also owned many African slaves. Unlike Brown, the original funding for Dartmouth came from a trust fund in England to educate Americans, and not from the slave trade. Columbia University founded in 1754……..The African slave trade made several White families rich and made American institutions wealthy and left millions of Black families disadvantaged.
